How to Fix Rounded Shoulders From Desk Work

Rounded shoulders from desk work don't fix themselves. Here's what's actually causing them and how massage therapy can help.

Rounded shoulders don't come from one bad day at your desk. They come from thousands of them.

By the time most people book in with me, they've already tried the chin tucks from YouTube, the posture brace from Amazon, and the reminder app they snoozed until they turned it off entirely. Nothing stuck. The problem kept coming back. And that's because they were treating the symptom, not what was driving it.

What's actually happening when your shoulders round forward?

It's not simply that your back muscles are weak and your chest is tight. That's part of it. But the fuller picture is about what's happened to the tissue itself after years of sitting in one position for six, eight, ten hours a day.

The muscles across your chest, the front of your shoulders, and into the neck get chronically shortened. They adapt to the position you keep putting them in. Meanwhile, the muscles between your shoulder blades and across your upper back get long and overstretched. They don't switch off entirely. But they stop working the way they should.

And when tissue stays in that shortened, loaded state for long enough, it stops being just a muscle problem. You get adhesions. Trigger points. Connective tissue that's lost its ability to move freely. That's why stretching alone doesn't fix it. You can stretch all day and the tissue will spring back, because the restriction is embedded in it, not just a product of your position right now.

Does massage actually fix rounded shoulders?

It won't fix your desk setup. And if you go straight back to eight hours of hunching after every session, you'll undo progress quickly. That's the honest answer.

But here's what it genuinely does. Deep tissue massage works directly on the tissue that's holding the restriction. The pec minor, the front of the shoulders, the upper traps, the levator scapulae. I can get pressure into those structures in a way that a stretch or a foam roller can't reach. When that tissue starts to release, the muscles on the other side of the joint actually have a chance to function again. The shoulder can sit back where it belongs.

I see this a lot with clients who do long hours in front of a screen. Three or four sessions in, the change in how they hold themselves is noticeable. Not because I've corrected their posture for them. Because the tissue finally has the range to allow it.

What does a session for rounded shoulders actually look like?

Most people coming in with this pattern book a 60-minute Full Body MOT, which gives me enough time to work through the chest, shoulders, and upper back properly. A 30-minute or 45-minute Area Focused slot works well for maintenance or if you want to concentrate on one area, but the first time through, I want the full picture.

I'll usually start on your back, working through the upper trapezius and the muscles that run along the shoulder blades. Then I'll flip you over and work into the pec minor and the front of the shoulder. That anterior work is what most people haven't had done before. And it's often where the biggest change comes from.

I work within your tolerance. Deep tissue doesn't mean aggressive. It means sustained, specific pressure that gets into the actual layer where the restriction sits.

How many sessions will it take?

Honestly, it depends how long the pattern's been there. Someone who's been desk-bound for ten years is not going to resolve it in one session. But that doesn't mean you need a long, open-ended course of treatment either.

Most people with desk-related rounded shoulders see real improvement across 3 to 6 sessions, combined with some changes to how they work. I'm not precious about this. If you're stretching the chest, sorting your screen height, and getting up regularly, you'll need fewer sessions and you'll hold the results longer. If nothing changes between appointments, you'll get maintenance rather than progress.

What you can do between sessions

This is where most people go wrong. They come in, feel better, and assume that's the job done. The session does the work on the tissue. What happens between appointments is what makes it last.

A few things that genuinely help:

  • Doorframe chest stretch, held for 60 to 90 seconds, two or three times a day. Not the ten-second version.
  • Wall angels, done slowly. They teach the shoulder blades to move correctly again.
  • Get up every 45 minutes. Not because one break solves anything, but because you're breaking the pattern before the tissue fully loads into it.
  • Check your screen height. If you're looking down at a laptop all day, everything else is fighting uphill.

None of this is complicated. The issue isn't that people don't know this stuff. It's that they try it for three days and stop because they haven't seen an immediate result.

Is it worth travelling to Rotherham for this?

I'm based at Glenwood Kitchens, 6 Front Street, Treeton, Rotherham, S60 5QP. Free parking on site. The clinic sits just off the Sheffield Parkway, so it's a straightforward drive from most parts of Sheffield and Rotherham alike, typically around 15 minutes from the city centre.

If you're sitting at a desk in South Yorkshire and your shoulders have been creeping forward for the last couple of years, this is exactly the kind of thing I work with regularly. You don't need to be an athlete for it to be worth sorting. You just need to have had enough of it.

Take a look at my full sports massage and soft tissue treatments to get a sense of what's available, or if you're ready to get started, book a session and I'll take it from there.
